Verizon touts 2009 network investment

Verizon invested more than $17 billion in 2009 in its and wireline networks in the US and internationally, reports TMCNet.

The Verizon global IP network serves more than 2 700 cities in 159 countries, and its wireless network reaches approximately 289 million Americans.

"It's no accident that again this year, Verizon's consumer and business services won major industry awards," says Dick Lynch, executive vice-president and chief technology officer for Verizon. "The better the network, the better the performance of the applications that on them. It's as simple as that."

SpinVox acquisition wrapped up

Struggling US technology company SpinVox has been acquired by fellow American firm Nuance Communications, it has been confirmed, states Comms-express.

The imaging solutions provider bought the voice-to-text services business for $102.5 million, which will allow Nuance to integrate SpinVox's carrier services with its own advanced speech recognition platform.

Through the use of structured cabling, Nuance hopes to expand its voice-to-text business operations by meeting the increased demand from customers across the world.

Sibeam updates wireless networking chip

Wireless chip maker Sibeam is preparing to unveil its second-generation product, dubbed Sibeam Gen2, for moving video at high speeds throughout a home, says VentureBeat.

Sibeam says it is beginning mass production of the chip. The company also announced that Best Buy will sell private-labelled Sibeam-based gear and invest in Sibeam as well.

The chip set will make the wireless modules smaller so that they can easily fit within the guts of a flat-panel TV. On top of that, Sibeam is also starting a licensing programme to give its solution to other manufacturers who could sell it.
