NEC Computers International Group announces today that the Versa Lite FX will be the first NEC notebook to ship with Windows 2000 Professional preinstalled. The other NEC notebooks will follow suit shortly thereafter, starting with the Versa Note VX.
The Versa Lite FX is a full-featured ultra-portable notebook. Up until now it had only been available with Window 98 in order to let users take full advantage of USB peripherals and Plug-and-Play support. This made it a natural candidate for Windows 2000 Professional. With the addition of Windows 2000, users now enjoy the ease of using Windows 98 with manageability, reliability and security of Windows NT.
Windows 2000 Professional supports all the latest hardware standards, including Universal Serial Bus (USB), IrDA and Firewire (IEEE 1394). In addition to this new peripheral support, Windows 2000 Professional also offers advanced power-management capabilities, thereby extending even farther the Versa Lite FX`s battery life. The first units will be shipped to customers at the end of February 2000. In addition, The Versa Note VX and the Versa LXi will be available with Windows 2000 at the end of March this year, while continuing to be available with Windows 98 and Windows NT.

Versa Lite FX
A full-featured ultra-portable notebook, the Versa Lite FX offers the choice of four Intel processors, 64MB of RAM and a roomy 6GB (12GB max.) hard drive. It boasts an eye-catching 12.1" TFT display and built-in 56K modem. The Versa Lite FX also comes standard with an external floppy drive and 24X CD-ROM drive. Equally at home on the road or in the office, the FX can be built-to-order with a built-in Mini-PCI 100baseTX/10BaseT LAN card. Perfect for long trips, the Versa Lite FX tips the scales at a mere 1.54kg, and offers up to 8 hours of battery life, when combining the optional standard 6-cell battery with the supplementary 9-cell battery pack.

The headphone and microphone jacks are conveniently located on the front of the unit. The Versa Lite FX is available with Windows 98 or Windows 2000 Professional, and comes with a full range of productivity software and utilities, including Microsoft Word 2000, Works 4.5A and Money 991, and a Recovery CD. It is PC 99 ready and ACPI compliant. The keyboard is equipped with a Euro keycap.
