Video-on-demand (VOD) platform Vidi has signed a deal with BBC Worldwide - the commercial arm of the BBC - that will make the British broadcaster's programming available to local subscribers in the coming months.

"The deal sees a raft of acclaimed shows, from drama to comedy to natural history and children's [shows], some of which will be available from the beginning of February," says Vidi in a statement.

These include the 13-part series Atlantis, which premiers on Vidi on 15 February. Other BBC titles lined up for February are Sherlock, Lurther, Ashes to Ashes, Misfits, Gavin & Stacey, and The Catherine Tate Show.

According to Vidi, it has also acquired three of the latest David Attenborough narrated series - Life, Frozen Planet and Human Planet. More BBC content will be added to the Vidi line-up in the weeks and months ahead.

"For those not yet signed up, Vidi is offering a seven-day trial membership so that all South Africans can experience just what it has to offer and just how easy, affordable and accessible it is," says the VOD service provider.

Owned by Times Media Group, Vidi dubs itself "Internet TV built for SA", and claims to be the first local VOD streaming service to offer both a monthly subscription option and/or an instant rental option across one platform.

At the end of last year, Vidi announced its content can now be watched on any device, including tablets and smartphones - without an app. "However, if subscribers prefer going via the app route, that option is now available through Android and iOS as part of the second phase of Vidi's rollout," says the service.

Vidi, which was launched in September, offers a monthly subscription option to a library of movies and TV series for R149 per month. Viewers also have the option to instantly rent latest releases just off the circuit individually, for R27, and a selection of premier library titles from R15.
