StorageTek has announced its Virtual Storage Manager Remote Library (VSMRL), an automated remote backup solution for virtual storage customers.
Available immediately, VSMRL is an optional feature that extends the capabilities of StorageTek`s recently announced Virtual Storage Manager (VSM) system, allowing high-speed access between virtual tape volumes and remotely located tape devices at cost savings of up to 75%. This is the first step in StorageTek`s introduction of virtual tape technology into remote disaster recovery opportunities."
StorageTek`s VSM is a virtual storage system that combines tape, disk and software to intelligently manage data access, retrieval and migration in a single integrated system.
"Virtual" storage is the temporary storage of data on a disk cache, and the automated migration of that data to tape drives. By keeping data resident in the disk cache, the user benefits from disk-like performance for tape applications at a fraction of the cost. And because data is compressed when writing to disk, that compression is carried forward when writing to tape, enabling better channel throughput and more efficient use of the ESCON channel. Additionally, VSM`s stacking capabilities allow for nearly 100% use of tape cartridge capacity.
Working in tandem with a VSM system, VSMRL can be used to expedite an intelligent disaster recovery plan, says Pieter Engelbrecht of local distributor CMS.
"VSMRL enables compressed data stored in a VSM system to be transferred as is to a remote location. Because the data is compressed by a factor of 4:1, less bandwidth is needed to transfer the data, saving customers as much as 75% of typical communication costs due to improved transfer rate."
StorageTek customers can also protect investments by taking immediate advantage of VSMRL with already installed StorageTek tape technology. This product combination complements StorageTek`s Virtual Intelligent Storage Architecture (VISTA), which enables the delivery of solutions that improve total cost of ownership and simplify storage management through automation.
