Virtual desktops lure SMEs

Desktop virtualisation outfit, Pano Logic has unveiled two new server contraptions that feed virtual desktops to its 'zero clients', small silver cubes meant to replace big and beefy client PCs, reports The Register.

With these server bundles, the California-based company is wooing all those SMEs that might need a little help erecting a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).

There are two different versions of its VDI Express offering: Express SMB and Express HA, says ReadWrite Cloud.

The SME version is sized for 30 desktops, and comes with an HP rack-mounted server that is preloaded and pre-configured with VMware vSphere 4 Essentials running on a Windows Server 2008.

The HA version includes a Fujitsu blade server, as well as Datacore Software's SAN Symphony V storage management software, and a redundant storage array to handle failovers and high availability situations.

The benefits of VDI have persuaded a growing number of small to mid-size companies, as well as remote offices within large distributed enterprises, to move from PCs to virtual computing, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The lack of resources and expertise required to evaluate and size infrastructure requirements for virtual desktop deployment have proved to be an impediment to these under-resourced IT teams. Pano Express SMB and Pano Express HA resolve that by providing a one-step solution to VDI, making it simple to get up and running quickly with two solutions sized for power end-users with a heavy workload.
