Veritas Software and IBM Data Management Systems have extended their partnership to deliver two new storage virtualisation products for the IBM DB2 Universal Database (UDB) market: Veritas Database Edition for DB2 and Veritas Database Edition/HA for DB2.
According to Nick van Noordwyk, regional director, Middle East and Africa at Veritas, the development offers storage management software that maximises manageability, availability and performance of DB2 environments.
"The solutions offer a non-proprietary storage management infrastructure that optimises database application performance and simplifies the administration of the underlying DB2 storage and server environment. This complements existing support for Oracle and Sybase relational database management systems."
The key difference between the products is that Veritas Database Edition/HA (high availability) for DB2 adds software clustering technology for customers requiring high availability in their DB2 environments. In addition, the two companies have signed a Cooperative Support Agreement that broadens the pre-existing arrangement and improves their ability to provide enterprise-class support to mutual customers.
"The new accord ensures faster problem resolution and encompasses all of the joint solutions that Veritas Software and IBM offer to enterprise customers," explains Van Noordwyk.
Meta Group`sMark Shainman greeted the news positively, describing DB2 as the second largest Unix database and the fastest growing one. "Software products that optimise storage for DB2 can offer a higher level of database manageability, availability and performance," he says.
Veritas Database Edition for DB2 integrates tightly with other storage management products from Veritas, protecting and ensuring availability of critical information stored in DB2 environments and providing a storage management framework.
"Veritas and IBM have previously worked together to deliver high availability and online backup solutions that support DB2," adds Van Noordwyk. "We plan to continue to collaborate with IBM to produce software-based, enterprise storage solutions that accommodate DB2 and other markets."
