vivo has announced the South African availability of its new V80 Lite 5G, with the latest addition to its V-series range putting battery endurance at the centre of the smartphone experience. Announced globally on 1 October 2026, the device is aimed at users who need a phone capable of handling work, communication, navigation, entertainment and photography throughout the day without constantly looking for a charger. The launch marks a key milestone, officially ushering South Africa into the 10 000mAh smartphone era.

The most notable specification is the phone’s 10 000mAh-class battery, which vivo describes as the first breakthrough into this capacity category for the V series. Alongside the large battery, the V80 Lite 5G combines a slim design with durability features, a 6.83-inch OLED display, 50MP Sony rear imaging, a 32MP wide-angle selfie camera and a collection of AI-powered productivity tools.

Rather than focusing on a single use case, vivo has designed the V80 Lite 5G around the idea of an everyday smartphone that can move between work and leisure. The company highlights scenarios ranging from GPS navigation and client calls to extended entertainment, while also emphasising the phone’s ability to withstand demanding outdoor conditions.

10 000mAh-class battery takes centre stage

The V80 Lite 5G’s headline feature is its 10 000mAh typical battery capacity, with a rated capacity of 9 800mAh. vivo says the battery uses fourth-generation silicon anode technology together with its Magic Cube Battery Packaging, a combination intended to provide extended heavy-use performance while allowing the smartphone to retain a slim and comfortable form factor.

The company has also built a range of battery management features around the high-capacity cell. Battery Life Extender is designed to keep essential functions, including emergency calls, available when the battery reaches 1%, while Super Battery Saver is intended to preserve remaining power when the battery is critically low.

Reverse charging is another practical addition. The V80 Lite 5G can be used as a portable power source for other compatible devices, such as true wireless earbuds, which could be useful when travelling or when a separate power bank is not available.

vivo has also put the battery through an endurance demonstration. The company says the V80 Lite 5G achieved a Guinness World Records title for the longest electronic product testing livestream, running for 32 hours and 37 minutes. The record is intended to underline the device’s focus on endurance rather than simply its headline battery capacity.

Battery longevity has been considered as well. According to vivo’s laboratory testing, its self-developed charging algorithm and six-layer protection system are designed to help preserve battery health, with the battery retaining at least 80% capacity after 1 400 charge cycles. Based on the company’s simulated daily usage model, this equates to approximately seven years of use. Actual results will vary according to usage patterns and conditions.

Keeping temperatures under control

A large battery can bring additional thermal demands, particularly when a smartphone is being used for navigation, gaming, video or other intensive tasks. The V80 Lite 5G therefore includes a 3.8K Ultra Large VC Cooling System, which vivo says is designed to help maintain performance during heavy workloads.

The handset is also specified to operate reliably between -30°C and 45°C. This is particularly relevant to a device positioned for users who may spend considerable time outdoors, although real-world performance will depend on environmental and usage conditions.

Built for more demanding conditions

Battery endurance is accompanied by a substantial focus on physical durability. vivo says the V80 Lite 5G has passed military-grade durability testing, with the product tested by a third-party laboratory against a number of MIL-STD-810H procedures.

The smartphone has an IP68 and IP69 rating under IEC 60529. vivo says controlled testing covered water immersion to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes, 24 hours of continuous heavy rain and a washing-machine cycle. The device was also tested against 22 everyday liquids.

Dust resistance is covered by an IP6X rating, with testing involving construction dust, sandstorms and beach sand. The handset has also undergone scratch testing, with vivo reporting that it withstood 2 500 scratch cycles without visible marks.

Drop resistance is another part of the package. Controlled vivo laboratory testing showed the phone’s core functions and screen remained operational after a three-metre drop onto carpet. The company cautions that such resistance is not permanent and that the result can vary depending on the height, angle and conditions of an impact.

The touchscreen is designed to remain responsive when used with wet or greasy hands, potentially making the phone more practical in rain, during exercise or when users are handling food and drink. As with the water and dust ratings, vivo notes that resistance can diminish with normal wear and that liquid damage is not covered by the warranty.

A 6.83-inch OLED display designed for outdoor visibility

The V80 Lite 5G features a 6.83-inch 1.5K high-brightness OLED display, with a 120Hz refresh rate and support for 1.07 billion colours. vivo quotes up to 2 000 nits of global peak brightness in HBM and says the display has received SGS Five-Star Sunlight-Readable Display Certification.

That emphasis on brightness is intended to make practical tasks such as reading documents and following maps easier in direct sunlight. The display is framed by 1.35mm bezels and achieves a reported 94.47% screen-to-body ratio.

For entertainment, the display is paired with dual stereo speakers enhanced by vivo’s VEQ Algorithm, which the company says delivers deeper and more powerful bass. The phone also includes display comfort features, including Sleep Comfort Mode, which gradually warms the screen’s colour temperature to reduce blue light, as well as Gaming Eye Protection for longer gaming sessions.

Refined design and South African colourways

Despite housing a high-capacity battery, the V80 Lite 5G maintains a sleek profile. Complementing its 1.35mm bezels and high screen-to-body ratio, vivo has added rounded corners and textured rear finishes inspired by natural elements.

Tailored for the South African market, the device will be available in two refined finishes:

Pearl white: Inspired by mother-of-pearl and the Pantone Color of the Year 2026 (Cloud Dancer), it offers a soft, "breathing" white with warm, subtle elegance.

Dawn black: Captures the moment just before sunrise, combining a deep base with a cool metallic sheen for a minimalist yet powerful look.

This thoughtful design approach gives the device a lifestyle-oriented appearance, consistent with the wider V-series positioning. The V80 Lite 5G successfully combines the endurance of a power-focused smartphone with the styling expected from a mainstream consumer handset.

50MP Sony rear camera and 32MP wide-angle selfie camera

Imaging remains a central part of the V80 Lite 5G. The rear camera system features a 50MP Sony camera with Sony optics, which vivo says is designed to deliver sharp, detailed photographs for everyday use.

On the front, a 32MP HD wide-angle selfie camera provides a 90-degree field of view after accounting for distortion. The wider perspective is particularly suited to group photographs, allowing more people to fit into the frame without relying on an unusually long selfie stick or stepping too far back.

The camera software adds several practical tools. A Check-in watermark can automatically add time and location information to photographs, which vivo positions as useful for documenting field visits, business trips and holidays. AI Erase can remove unwanted bystanders or reflections from an image with a single tap, although the feature requires a network connection.

AI features target everyday productivity

The V80 Lite 5G also expands beyond camera-based AI with a selection of tools aimed at communication and productivity. AI Smart Call Assistant supports real-time call transcription, translation and summarisation, potentially reducing the need to take notes manually during important conversations.

AI Transcript Assist is aimed at longer-form content, converting meetings and lectures into organised, searchable text. For users who regularly move between devices, vivo Office Kit supports cross-screen file transfers and task handoffs.

Sharing has also been streamlined through One-Tap Transfer between vivo and supported iPhone devices, while Shake & Share allows users to send photographs to a group at once. Private Space provides a separate area for sensitive files and applications, keeping them apart from the phone’s everyday content.

vivo notes that the availability of individual AI features can vary according to apps, device settings, country, region and language. This means the precise feature set experienced by South African users may depend on local software availability.

What the V80 Lite 5G brings to the V series

The V80 Lite 5G represents a notable shift in the balance of features offered within vivo’s V series. While the range has traditionally placed significant emphasis on design and photography, this model adds an unusually large battery and a stronger focus on physical durability.

For users who spend long periods away from a charger, the 10 000mAh-class battery is likely to be the headline attraction. The combination of reverse charging, battery health management and power-saving features makes the battery proposition more comprehensive than capacity alone.

At the same time, the device retains several features aimed at everyday smartphone users, including a 120Hz OLED display, Sony camera hardware, wide-angle selfies, stereo speakers, 5G connectivity and AI-powered productivity tools. Its IP68 and IP69 ratings and military-grade testing add another layer for consumers who want a handset that can cope with more challenging environments.

The V80 Lite 5G therefore sits at the intersection of endurance and lifestyle features: a smartphone built around the practical benefit of spending less time charging, while still providing the display, camera, software and design features expected from a contemporary V-series device.
