VMware looks to smartphone virtualisation

VMware has flagged smartphones as the next platform in the evolution of virtualisation, but at least one major competitor, Microsoft, says it sees no demand for the technology, writes Computerworld.

Srinivas Krishnamurti, VMware's head of mobile phone virtualisation, said the company's vision for virtualisation on smartphones went beyond the basic dual-boot prototypes currently in development to one that ran both a private and work operating system and profile at the same time.

“We don't think dual booting will be good enough, we'll allow you to run both profiles at the same time and be able to switch between them by clicking a button,” he said. “You'll be able to get and make calls in either profile - work or home - as they will both be live at any given point in time.”

IT staff drive virtualisation adoption

An expert has claimed that high-level staff at many firms are not behind their to virtualisation, writes OneStopClick.

Stuart Brameld, technology manager at Nebulas Solutions, has claimed that IT departments are having a massive impact on whether companies are turning to the technology or not.

He explained: "I think that IT management and technical-level guys are far more aware of the benefits that they can bring and that has helped drive the adoption. The use of virtual machines began in lab and test environments, it is them who really have sold it to the boardroom."

Avaya delivers virtualised UC solution

Realising the need for a more cost-effective UC (unified communications) solution, enterprise communications provider Avaya unveiled its upgraded Avaya Aura offering, focusing on using virtualisation as a delivery platform, reports The Industry Standard.

Leveraging recent innovation in virtualisation technology, Avaya said its enhanced Aura solution can be considered a single enterprise multi-vendor dial plan.

"With Avaya Session Manager, companies can easily integrate multi-vendor legacy systems into our platform," explained Steve Vials, senior product manager, customer service and applications, Avaya Asia-Pacific.
