VMware unveils cost calculator
VMware has made available an online service that it claims can help users evaluate the true costs of server virtualisation expenses, says Computerworld.
The VMware Cost-Per-Application Calculator enables users to estimate cost-savings from VMware software, and compare that to other virtualisation wares from competing vendors, such as Microsoft.
Virtualisation calculators are not entirely new: Microsoft has a virtualisation ROI calculator and Parallels has one for desktop virtualisation.
Glasshouse Technologies optimises virtualisation
IT consultancy Glasshouse Technologies has unveiled a managed service to help companies manage their virtualisation infrastructures, as well as optimise its return on investment (ROI), reports NetworkWorld.
Glasshouse says that with its Virtualisation Optimisation Service, "vendor-independent professionals" look at ongoing ways of reducing costs beyond the normal approach of server consolidation, via a number of other methods including round-the-clock monitoring and reporting on virtualisation machine activities.
Glasshouse says that its consultants look to provide practical, actionable recommendations for how a business can keep its virtual environment optimised for maximum efficiency and cost-savings. It also aims to improve service levels.
Virtualised multiple OS handset arrives soon
A low-priced mobile handset capable of running multiple operating systems in virtual windows and with similar features to much higher priced smartphones is about to hit the market, states iTWire.
The handset will run Linux and at least one other OS on top of the OKL4 hypervisor from Open Kernel Labs, a specialist developer of mobile virtualisation software.
According to senior executives at Open Kernel Labs, the up-coming phone's technology will show that the days of having low-cost handsets seamlessly running applications from Symbian, Windows Mobile, Linux and other operating systems side by side, are here.
