Vodacom has introduced a product it says is aimed at helping contract customers manage their roaming spend and reduce international roaming bills.

The operator says the service - Vodacom Travel Saver - gives contract customers access to lower-priced fixed rates for calls, SMS and data.

Vodacom explains: "The service is free to opt into. If call, SMS, or activity takes place while the customer is overseas, the flat-rate fees will automatically kick-in and the daily subscription fee of R30 will be applied. If no billable activity takes place, then no daily fee will be applied."

On this R30 daily subscription, calls will cost R2.50 per minute; SMSes 80c each and R2 per MB.

To opt into the service, customers need to SMS the word "save" to 123 or +27 82 123 and to deactivate it, send the word "saveoff" to either of the same numbers. Upon returning to SA, says Vodacom, the service will remain activated on the SIM card but will only apply when travelling.

The service is currently available in the following 26 countries and applies to all networks within those countries: Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique and Tanzania (Africa); Australia, India, New Zealand (Australasia); Albania, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the UK (Europe); and Qatar in the Middle East.
