From today, Vodacom prepaid customers will be able to make and receive calls using their existing prepaid SIM cards when they travel to Namibia and roam with mobile phone operator MTC.
There are neither deposits nor high accounts that customers have to be worried about which makes prepaid roaming of real benefit in terms of controlled spending.
"Vodacom`s prepaid roaming service demonstrates once again the company`s sensitivity to the needs of its prepaid customers who are now empowered to further enjoy the cellphone experience without geographical limitations," said Mthobi Tyamzashe, Vodacom`s Group Executive: Corporate Affairs.
Vodacom was the first cellular operator in the entire African continent to launch the "Please Call Me" service, which has helped bridge the communication divide between those who have call minutes and those who have not. With prepaid roaming, cellphone users will be able to recharge for free through USSD, a short messaging service (SMS) functionality technology that makes it possible to access services such as the "Please Call Me" facility.
It is anticipated that Vodacom prepaid customers will be able to roam to at least five more countries in three continents before the end of the year.
Vodacom contract customers already have the ability to roam on 206 international GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks in 107 foreign countries.
Vodacom customers who would want to roam to Namibia can make a free call to Vodacom customer care on 111 from their Vodacom cellphones to activate their roaming service.
