About 92% of South Africans (37 613 745) are now within the coverage area of Vodacom`s digital cellular network, the company said today. This figure is up by about 6% compared to May 1999. Vodacom`s 4 400 base stations now extend coverage to 734 335 square kilometres, or 60.2 percent of South Africa. Joan Joffe, Group Executive - Corporate Affairs of Vodacom, said: "Vodacom`s four million customers made some 1.2 billion calls last month. Essentially, Vodacom made the ability to call for help, to apply for jobs or to simply phone a friend for a chat, a technical possibility for 92% of the South African population."
