Leading cellular operator Vodacom has rolled-out additional cellular infrastructure to coincide with the 7th All Africa Games.

A new permanent base station situated near the Alexandra Clinic, a microcell inside the Alexandra Police Station, increased capacity at Vodacom`s London Road base station and very high capacity at a recently built base station are providing cellular coverage for the Athlete`s Village, Johannesburg Stadium and adjacent areas. The Athlete`s Village is situated in Alexandra.

Vodacom has installed dedicated microcells in most of South Africa`s big stadiums. Johannesburg Stadium, Ellis Park, FNB, as well as Nasrec and Gallagher Estate all have microcells inside their grounds.

Microcells are also strategically placed in the surrounding areas to ensure that people experience excellent coverage inside the stadiums and also while they are waiting in queues outside.

During the current financial year Vodacom will spend more than R2,3 billion increasing its network capacity to cater for 3 million customers.

Vodacom is the official event sponsor of the 7th All Africa Games and supplied Africa`s sporting showcase with some 500 cellphones. The Games are taking place from 10th to 19th September 1999.
