Vodacom downplays network woes

By Christelle du Toit, ITWeb senior journalist

The three-hour downtime on the Vodacom network yesterday has been attributed to technical problems.

According to Dot Field, chief communications officer for the Vodacom group, a database configuration error caused the network to fail.

Customers were unable to make or receive calls or SMSes between 6pm and 9pm, and GPS services on mobile phones were also affected.

Field did not want to be drawn on how much the outage cost Vodacom in lost revenue, or how much revenue it has lost over the past three months due to outages.

She did say that less than 1% of customers were affected by yesterday's problem, adding that the network is now fully functional as "the issue was identified and rectified".

Field would not say why the problem occurred, or how it would be prevented from occurring again.
