Vodacom`s newly launched prepaid Power Starter Pack is the fastest way to get into cellular because it comes preloaded with an active R120 Incomer voucher and a R29 prepaid recharge voucher.

"This means customers can walk into any one of Vodacom`s more than 6 000 distribution outlets, buy a R199 Vodago Power Starter Pack off the shelf and begin making calls immediately, as long as they already own a cellphone," said Andrew Mthembu, Managing Director of Vodacom (Pty) Ltd.

The Power Starter Pack provides all the tools a first-time user of Vodago requires to make and receive calls. The SIM card will be active when the user puts it into the phone, so calls can be made and received immediately.

The Power Starter Pack has an airtime window of 379 days with a preloaded R29 voucher. The user will be able to make calls and send SMS messages up to the value of R29. Further airtime windows, from subsequent recharge vouchers loaded into the user`s account, will be added on to this total and can be accumulated up to a maximum of 730 days.

"The new Power Starter Packs offer exceptional value and assist new users in using the Vodacom network with very little hassle.

"When cellular was launched in South Africa in 1994, nobody would have thought that cellphones would eventually be owned by such a wide variety of people. Prepaid vouchers have meant that everybody from the businessman to the street hawker can own a cellphone, and more than 90% of all new connections to the Vodacom network are prepaid," said Mr Mthembu.

Vodacom shareholders have to date approved a R11,4 billion investment in the network. Of this, R3,7 billion is for the 2000/2001 financial year. The money will be spent mostly to boost capacity as well as the quality of service to the network`s existing 3,5 million users as well as future users.
