Cellular operator Vodacom has signed a deal with UK company SpinVox that will allow it to send voice messages via text to its subscribers.
Launched this morning, the service charges users R99 per month for an unlimited amount of English voice messages to be sent directly to customers` inboxes, with an option to reply via text or to return the call received.
A limited number of free two-week Voicemail2SMS trials have also been made available to Vodacom customers, via Vodacom`s retail stores.
SpinVox co-founder and CEO Christina Domecq says the company`s technology will make Vodacom the first operator to offer a voice-to-text service in Africa.
The SpinVox product offering is already available in North America and Europe in English, French, German and Spanish.
SpinVox forecasts a global subscriber base of at least six million in the first quarter of 2008.
The British company operates by using a trademarked Voice Message Conversion System, which works by combining computer-based speech technologies with a live-learning language process.
