The Vodacom Group has made a number of organisational changes and new executive appointments.
These include the appointment of Peter Matlare as chief strategy and business development officer, and the reshuffling of a number of MDs at its Africa operations. The appointments are effective from 1 April.
Matlare is the former CEO of the South African Broadcasting Corporation and is currently executive director of commercial at Vodacom SA. He fills the newly-created post of group level executive of chief strategy and business development, the incumbent of which reports to group CEO Allan Knott-Craig.
Dietlof Mare, current MD of Vodacom Congo, has been appointed MD of Vodacom Tanzania, a position vacated by Romeo Khumalo, who becomes Vodacom SA's commercial director of sales, marketing and new products. Mare's appointment is for an initial period of three years.
Mervyn Visagie, MD of Vodacom Lesotho, leaves his post to become MD of Vodacom Congo, for an initial period of two years, making way for Godfrey Mbingo to become Vodacom Lesotho MD, for an initial period of three years. Visagie and Mbingo are expected to work together in Lesotho for an initial period.
Unchanged strategy
Vodacom chief communications officer Dot Field says it is standard practice in multinational organisations that management structures within respective operating companies are rotated on a frequent basis.
Field adds that Vodacom's acquisition strategy remains the same, and the organisational and management changes are not in preparation for aggressive acquisition activities.
Vodacom's current strategy and mergers and acquisitions unit will be resourced to focus exclusively on mergers and acquisitions, with Nku Nyembezi-Heita continuing in her role as chief of this division.
The strategy and mergers and acquisitions group will also assume responsibility for the company's envisaged broad-based black economic empowerment equity transaction.
Vodacom previously said it would make an announcement on the proposed R7.5 billion transaction in March.
