Vodacom prepaid and contract customers in SA now have a new way to pay for applications on BlackBerry App World, the operator announced yesterday.

Together with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM), the cellphone operator has devised a new billing service that enables Vodacom customers to buy apps by charging the transaction directly to their contract or prepaid account.

“Vodacom customers will also be offered the flexibility of charging in-app purchases to their regular bill, or deducting the costs from their prepaid account, which allows goods to be purchased without interrupting the app experience.”

Bob Bose, RIM's regional MD, says the new billing service will give BlackBerry users on the Vodacom network easier access to “tens of thousands of apps ranging from productivity to entertainment”.

According to Richard Boorman, Vodacom's head of corporate affairs, the operator has a base of roughly two million BlackBerry users in SA.
