JSE-listed Vodacom, SA's largest cellular operator, has announced several departures from its board, due to various reasons.

The group yesterday told shareholders that Pieter Uys, the outgoing CEO, stepped down from the board and was replaced by Shameel Aziz-Joosub. Aziz-Joosub will also take up the role of MD of Vodacom SA.

Uys' resignation, after four years at the helm, was announced in July. Joosub will lead the company through the next stage in its development although there will be a smooth handover of responsibilities from Uys to Joosub.

Joosub has been with Vodacom since its inception in 1994 and has been described by the company as a key architect in growing the business. He joined the company as an accounting clerk and was promoted to head up the commercial arm of Vodacom SA in 2000, after holding several positions within the telco.

From 2000 to 2005, Joosub was responsible for increasing Vodacom's South African subscriber base from 2.5 million to almost nine million. After being promoted to MD of Vodacom SA in 2005, Joosub oversaw the growth of the business to 24 million subscribers.

Joosub took over the reins at Vodafone Spain at the beginning of last April.

Changing faces

Paolo Bertoluzzo, a non-executive director, has taken up a new role as CEO of Vodafone's Southern Europe operations and stepped down from the board as of yesterday.

Non-executive director Karen Witts will leave Vodafone at the end of September to take up a position at another FTSE top 100 company, and resigned from the board with effect from yesterday.

Serpil Timuray joined the board yesterday. She is CEO of Vodafone Turkey, having joined Vodafone in January 2009. Before taking up that role, Timuray was CEO of Danone Turkey. She began her career in 1991 with Procter & Gamble, where she was later appointed to the executive committee of P&G Turkey.

John Otty, who has a Masters Degree in electronic engineering, joined the board yesterday. He is Vodafone's CFO for Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific region, and joined the operator in December 1992 from KPMG Peat Marwick.

Otty has held a number of senior executive positions in Vodafone, including that of group technology financial director, interim CFO of Vodafone India, and Vodafone group internal audit director.
