Cellular operator Vodacom has extended its footprint in KwaZulu-Natal, unveiling 13 base stations in Ndwedwe, north of Durban.

Ndwedwe has a population of almost 170 000 - all who previously had no access to the Vodacom . The company claims that no other provider operates in the area.

"Cellphones play a significant part in promoting bottom-up socio-economic development, even among the poorest communities," says MD for Vodacom SA, Shameel Joosub.

The base stations have been operational since Saturday, according to an official Vodacom statement.

Joosub highlights the developmental aspects to increasing coverage in KwaZulu-Natal, which include allowing entrepreneurs to sell airtime and people to advertise small businesses with an easily accessible contact number.

"The value of cellphones to the individual is great - because other ways of communication, such as postal systems, roads and fixed-line phones are often poor," he adds.
