Vodacom has introduced another cellphone that caters for elderly users: the Alcatel 2000.
Designed for the specific needs of the elderly, the Alcatel 2000 features large keypad buttons and a large on-screen font.
The 2.4-inch screen cellphone also has a dedicated SOS button to alert people nearby and to trigger calls or text messages to pre-designated numbers stored on the phone, battery life that will last up to seven hours of talk time, and dedicated keys for FM radio, lock and torch.
In 2012, Vodacom introduced the Vodafone 155 - also aimed at the elderly market, as well as customers with poor vision, hearing loss or limited dexterity.
Vodacom says these phones are an answer to the challenge older people face in keeping up with technology, while having to deal with vision, hearing and other health-related problems. "We realise that as people get older, they experience capability loss, which makes it more difficult to use a mobile phone."
The Vodafone 155 has a big button keypad, noise cancellation technology, extra-loud volume and is compatible with hearing aids. Like the Alcatel 2000, this handset also has an emergency SOS button.
The Alcatel 2000 is available at Vodacom World, in Midrand, and other participating Vodacom outlets, for the recommended selling price of R499.
The new phone is also available on Vodacom's uChoose Flexi 100 package, for R79 per month, which includes R100 airtime.
