Vodacom has unveiled a video collaboration solution that allows multiple users to hold video conferences from meeting rooms, desktops or mobile devices.
According to the company, the solution is available for any device that has a built-in Web cam, including smartphones and tablets. It uses bridging software, which allows conference participants to utilise the solution with different devices from various vendors.
Gary Hart, executive head for unified communications at Vodacom, says the solution is compatible with a wide range of applications, allowing users to share their screens when displaying Excel spreadsheets, Word documents and Smartboards.
Hart says the solution works in a similar way to teleconferencing, explaining that users are provided with a voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) number to join a video conference. He adds that, because the solution is device-agnostic, it can be implemented almost immediately, with users simply needing to download the software onto their devices.
Total communication provider
Hart says the release of Vodacom's video collaboration solution is in line with the company's aim to evolve from being a mobile operator to a total communication provider.
He adds that the company offers services including VOIP, IP telephony, IP PBX, and hosted call centres.
In addition, says Hart, Vodacom plans to roll out hosted PBX, which is currently on trial, as well as fixed mobile convergence, which will be hosted in the cloud. These services will be available later this year.
The Vodacom video collaboration solution is available immediately from Vodacom Business Services.
