Vodafone's cloud service will officially close as of November. Users lost the ability to upload any new content on 8 September but have until 1 November to download and move all of the content stored on their Vodafone Cloud account.
"Your account and all stored content will be automatically and permanently deleted after this date," says Vodafone.
Vodacom's parent company says it has "reviewed our products and services", leading to the decision to shut down the standalone Vodafone Cloud service. The Vodafone Cloud app has already been deactivated but users can access their saved content via the Vodafone Cloud Web portal.
Vodafone says users can instead use Vodafone Backup+, which launched in partnership with Dropbox earlier this year. Backup+ syncs contacts and backs up photos, videos and other data to Dropbox.
"We created Backup+ to increase convenience and functionality for our customers wanting to back up their precious things from a smartphone," according to a Vodafone spokesperson, who told ITWeb this is not a rebrand.
"Our partnership with Dropbox will fully replace Vodafone Cloud."
The spokesperson would not disclose how many consumers were using Cloud but insists Backup+ is a more convenient service.
"Backup+ syncs with Dropbox which is the market leading file sync and share service, and therefore will create additional convenience for our customers."
Vodafone Cloud was first launched in December 2011.
