Vox moves corporate SA closer to international bandwidth standards

Vox launches Fishbone line bonder.

Johannesburg, 13 Mar 2009

Vox Telecom's research and development division has partnered with an international company to offer innovative line bonding technology to South African businesses, enabling them to aggregate all their available bandwidth. The launch of Fishbone line bonder will give corporates access to high-speed and high-capacity Internet at a reasonable cost, says Vox Datapro MD Gary Sweidan.

“In many overseas countries, people are used to getting at least 10Mbps Internet access to their offices,” says Sweidan. “In South Africa, that's been prohibitively expensive for most companies until now. Fishbone offers South Africans the same kinds of speed by combining multiple access lines into one, high-speed pipe.”

Fishbone aggregates any number of ADSL lines to make high-speed access available at a fraction of the cost of traditional fixed-line access. Fishbone also bonds mediums such as Diginet, fibre and point-to-point wireless with ADSL. “Basically, we can link up any point-to-point access technology that's ethernet compatible,” says Sweidan. “If some new technology comes along next year, we'll be able to add that in as well. There is nothing else like it available in South Africa.

“In many cases where corporates have multiple access technologies in place as a backup against failures, some of that capacity goes to waste,” adds Sweidan. “For example, while the Diginet line is working properly, an ADSL line may sit unused. With Fishbone, all the available capacity can actually be combined and used as one.”

Bandwidth usage is billed separately, with customers able to choose between bundles of 10GB and up, or a fixed amount of access split between local and international bandwidth. “The connection itself is cheaper, so people can spend more of their budget actually using it,” explains Sweidan.

Also unique to Fishbone is a dedicated network management system that allows Vox Datapro to monitor and manage all its Fishbone solutions and associated links remotely. “We can monitor lines on each customer's network, reboot the routers associated with the lines and, if necessary, log faults with network operators,” says Sweidan.

“We are very excited about Fishbone. It's exclusive to the Vox Telecom group and offers the best value-for-money corporate Internet access solution currently available,” he says. “Fishbone will allow our customers to get far more out of their existing connectivity investments.”
