VSAT 'key driver' for Africa

In order to encourage business development on the continent, Africa's citizens must become more involved in learning how to implement their own technology systems.

This is the view of Jide Awe, MD of Jidaw Systems, a Nigerian-based African ICT human resources and consulting firm, which will host a hands-on VSAT training course in Lagos on 22 and 23 November.

In a digitally-networked global economy, provided through VSAT is a key driver for business enterprise in Africa, he says.

"It makes no sense to keep on relying on international experts to deploy local VSAT solutions, when expertise can be developed locally," he says.

The course aims to develop local expertise in installation, design and deployment of VSATs, he says. Areas covered include: satellite fundamentals, SAT design, link budgets, VSAT service, site survey and site commissioning.

Awe notes 80% of Africa's international and data traffic is carried via satellites due to poor terrestrial alternatives, making VSAT deployment fundamental for the continent.

Less than 5% of the African populace has access to fixed-line telephony systems and over 80% of Africans live in rural areas with little or no telecoms infrastructure, he says.
