As the world focuses on the re-building of Iraq, regional director for Enterasys Networks Africa, Martin May has called on all international companies operating in Africa and SA to remain focused on their support for initiatives to uplift the continent.
"The war in the Middle East will have a devastating affect on the African continent as companies focus on their shares, their operations and their survival.
"The tremendous inroads made in uplifting the continent through social responsibility efforts must not lose momentum now that the world is focusing on the Gulf region," says May.
"The original reasons for becoming involved in social upliftment projects in Africa have not changed and I call on all international companies operating on the continent to remain true to their stated goals."
May says the politics behind the latest invasion should not be used as an excuse to defer delivering on projects to help the African people.
"The world and the UN will be focusing on the re-building of Iraq and while this is important, companies working in Africa should not loose sight of their responsibility to uplifting this nation and continent."
May admits it may become increasingly difficult for international companies to push through with social responsibility drives as head offices batten down the hatches in a an uncertain war economy. However, he believes with enough pressure from local directors, social responsibility need not be seriously affected.
"It would be a shame to see Africa and her people as the ultimate victim of this war," concludes May.
