Web Africa launches prioritised bandwidth

Local ISP, Web Africa, is the first ISP to offer prioritised bandwidth through its new Business ADSL offering, launched today.

This comes shortly after the company deployed new and improved traffic management systems that facilitate the grouping of different types of traffic, from VOIP and gaming through to Windows Updates and Streaming Videos.

“We are now able to give preference to interactive and time-sensitive services like VOIP and gaming above non-interactive services like Windows Updates or P2P during loading times to ensure the best user experience,” says Cliff Hazell, marketing executive at Web Africa.

When comparing prioritised traffic to unshaped traffic, unshaped treats all traffic types the same, whereas traffic prioritisation ensures that critical applications have a higher priority and will be fully operational regardless of the load on the network.

While unshaped bandwidth may sound attractive, it offers no intelligent traffic management. It is therefore likely that protocols such as P2P and other download traffic could choke the network. Since no provider sells ADSL on a 1:1 contention ratio, it slows time-critical applications (games, VOIP VPN and streaming) and interactive applications (Web-browsing and e-mail) down.

“By effectively utilising traffic priority management, we are reducing the chance of our network becoming congested in the first place,” says Hazell.

Key features of the new offering include platinum priority bandwidth, optimised for business use; additional bandwidth redundancy and stability; prioritised business support; and up to 10mbps line speed.

Existing customers can upgrade instantly via Web Africa's DSL Console and new customers can sign up straight away on the company's Business product page, or give the company a call on 0861 555 222.

Business users will also be able to enjoy the benefit of the newly launched Download Plus add-on incentive, which doubles your existing bandwidth allocation and offers bandwidth from R8 per GB between 12am and 6am.
