Local Internet service provider (ISP) and hosting company Web Africa has revised its home ADSL packages and lowered top-up data costs, following a 30% drop in the cost of IP Connect (IPC) last week.
Web Africa says it has “dramatically” revised its home ADSL offering, removing the peak and off-peak differentiator, and delivering up to 400% more anytime connectivity, at the same price. “For instance, a customer who previously had 2GB peak and 8GB off-peak, for R149, will now have 10GB of anytime data for the same price.”
Web Africa CEO Tim Wyatt-Gunning says the ISP took the decision in order to simplify its home offering and bring customers connectivity “without complicated terms of usage, and at the best price possible”.
Web Africa's new Home Connect packages deliver data from R7.99 per GB. “Web Africa will not differentiate between international and local traffic, delivering data at the same low costs, no matter where data is coming from.”
The ISP has also lowered the costs of top-up data and says unused data will be rolled over to the following month, never to expire.
IPC cut
The Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) announced last week that fixed-line operator Telkom would cut the cost of IPC by 30%.
The move was expected to increase ISPs' margins, stimulate innovation and increase investment. In addition to this, noted ICASA, space for retail price cuts would lead to increased ADSL penetration and growth in fixed-line access.
However, ISPs could not immediately give an indication of how much savings would be passed on to the end-user.
Web Africa's new packages are already available, with existing customers having been automatically switched over to the improved offering.
