Web & print publishing leader plays leading role in fighting Internet piracy

By Adobe Systems
Johannesburg, 25 Aug 1999

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) President and Chairman, Charles Geschke, joined the Department of Justice, U.S. Customs , and the FBI recently in announcing new, sweeping efforts to combat and other forms of piracy.

The DOJ, FBI, and U.S. Customs announced a new law enforcement initiative aimed at software piracy. These three agencies agreed to increase their enforcement efforts nationwide, with a focus on criminal prosecutions with increased penalties for intellectual property offenders.

Dr. Geschke spoke on behalf of the business software community in expressing his support for the government`s renewed efforts. "It is vitally important that the Internet not become or be perceived as a safe haven for piracy. Piracy sites already exist on the Internet, ranging from warez sites that offer free downloads of software to auction sites where unscrupulous individuals sell illegal copies of software to unsuspecting consumers," stated Dr. Geschke. He added that "criminal law enforcement is essential to deterring piracy especially on the Internet which is an anonymous and easy place for pirates to take advantage of consumers."

As part of its widespread campaign to enforce copyright compliance, Adobe has partnered with anti-piracy organizations such as The Business Software Alliance (BSA) and the Software Publisher`s Association (SPA) to investigate and litigate end-user and reseller companies. In addition, the company educates customers about proper software licensing and encourages them to report people offering counterfeit Adobe products to piracy@adobe.com.

Founded in 1982, Adobe Systems builds award-winning software solutions for Web and print publishing. Its graphic design, imaging, dynamic media, and authoring tools enable customers to create, publish and deliver visually-rich content for various types of media. The company`s products are used by Web and graphic designers, professional publishers, document-intensive organizations, business users, and consumers. It employs over 2,400 employees worldwide and has operations in North America, Europe, the Pacific Rim, Japan and Latin America. Adobe`s worldwide headquarters are in San Jose, California and its web site is located at www.adobe.com.
