Web Training, a Synergy Holdings company has just completed the installation of Vizual Business Tools Personnel Manager at Transnet's head office in Johannesburg. Transnet Limited is today recognised as the dominant player in the Southern Africa transport arena. The company operates and controls South Africa's major transport infrastructure and consists of the holding company, Transnet, and seven transport businesses.
Transnet (head office) was looking for a user-friendly Human Resources package that could handle its large workforce and could be customised internally to suit their exact requirements. Comprehensive HR reports also needed to be pulled from the package. Personnel Manager was therefore the obvious choice.
The installation included an empowerment programme, which involved training for both the Human Resources and Information Technology departments of Transnet. A multi-user licence was purchased and all additional workstations will be loaded internally by Transnet's IT department without the intervention of outside assistance.
Part of the training included extensive work on customisation and development of the package. Hein Corporaal, Business Manager of Web Training says, "The staff at Transnet quickly put to use their new found skills and customised everything right down to the screen captures - which now have a distinct Transnet branding".
Transnet also invested in a new database, and opted for Paradox software in order to interface to other programmes. Using ODBC drivers to link applications, data can be extracted from the system to other applications that require the same information.

Transnet has also opted for a 1-year maintenance contract, which includes free telephonic and technical support and free annual upgrades.
