The main purpose of the TMT app is to keep Webber Wentzel's clients informed and empowered by alerting them of changes in the law, says LexisNexis.

Content and technology solutions provider LexisNexis SA has teamed up with firm, Webber Wentzel to develop a law firm app specifically for Webber Wentzel clients in the technology media and telecommunications ('TMT') space.

The Webber Wentzel TMT app will enable the law firm's clients to access vital information quickly and stay on top of the latest legal news and emerging issues, regardless of where they are or what device they are using.

It features relevant legislation, case law and content supplied by Webber Wentzel, including articles, presentations, seminar notes and case summaries, says LexisNexis.

It also has an 'ask a question' feature which will generate an automatic e-mail to an expert in that practice area, it explains.

Thabo Molefe, commercial director at LexisNexis SA, says the main purpose behind the development of the new TMT app is to keep Webber Wentzel's clients informed and empowered by them of changes in the law.

"Webber Wentzel recognised that as a legal publisher LexisNexis has access to the legislation and case law that they required. In addition, our history of developing innovative content solutions means we have been able to bring key strengths to the table to create a technically sound, user-friendly tool for their clients."

The legal sector is a field often bogged down by the need to balance extensive research and knowledge with practical, billable work, says Molefe. Also, everybody wants fast, accurate information that enables them to achieve better outcomes and stay on the right side of the law, he adds.

"With legislation and technology changing on a daily basis, LexisNexis will keep exploring new ways to increase efficiency and help clients achieve better outcomes and remain compliant. In that way we're fulfilling our global purpose of upholding the rule of law."

A PwC report says law firms plan to invest in IT in 2016 to improve efficiency and are also reporting improving the use of IT as their number one support service.

It adds new entrants to the market are bringing disruption and fuelling the need for firms to continually adapt and innovate. Firms now recognise 'the need to respond to the age' as a critical component of the overall strategy, says PwC.

Also, they are acknowledging that digital technologies (including social, mobile, analytics, and cloud) will provide alternative channels to interact with clients and improve the client experience, it adds.

According to a Law Firm Mobile report, big law firms have made steady gains in the production of mobile apps for smart phones and, to a very small extent, tablets.

It adds mobile Web sites continue to be implemented at a much higher rate than mobile apps, mainly due to fact that mobile compatible Web sites present an easier-to-understand value proposition to law firms than apps.

The app is available for free download via the Apple app store or Google Play store.
