What women really want

I'm sure most of us men reading this have found ourselves in this situation before: It's your spouse's birthday and you've got no idea what to get her. You know that gone are the days where men buy women microwaves as gifts. Not unless you wish to receive a microwave to the head. So now where do you turn? Clothes? Shoes? Perfume? Or do you take a page out of your own book and buy her an iPod?

Now I'm guessing that majority of men are probably asking: "Why would I buy her an iPod over perfume?" The answer is simple, because she would prefer it.

The truth, gentlemen, is that women love tech just as much as we do. I recently went about asking a few of my lady friends what their preference between a new pair of shoes and an iPod Touch is. Out of all 24 women I asked, only two of them chose Jimmy Choo over Apple. I was surprised at the results of my informal survey, but somehow I feel like they should have been expected.

I thought about the joy of ripping off the plastic wrap around the box to a new tech-toy. The excitement of getting rid of the factory settings and make it mine. Then I realised that it's not my masculinity that brings about these feelings. We all love new tech-toys, a new gadget that promises to make our lives easier or more entertaining, and it's no different for women. Perhaps a few years ago, women were more intimidated by technology than they are now, but tech has become a part of her everyday life.

Women need technology just as much as men do. The business place is no longer a male-dominated realm, as more and more women are establishing themselves in the world of commerce. This results in the need for smartphones, laptops, and GPS navigators among women as well.

Around the home, women make use of technology to run everyday tasks, from online grocery shopping to keeping life organised with an electronic memo. In the fitness world, more women are cottoning on to the idea of using tech and gadgets such as the Nike+ concept used with Apple iPods to track running stats. And how often do we see a group of men on a night out snapping photographs to post on Facebook? Not all that often, I can assure you, as it's the ladies who are more trigger-happy with the camera than men.

Studies have shown that women are rapidly gaining market share when it comes to tech purchases. Not more than five years ago, women were accounting for 50% of the technology sales in the US. This number has increased over the past few years and companies have now realised it is the women who are the future of the market. So isn't it time that we men start taking heed of this knowledge and start getting our ladies what they really want?

Our better halves do a lot for us men. They cook, they clean, they mother our children, and they manage to keep us out of as much trouble as possible. The month of August is dedicated to women, and so maybe it's time we put this new knowledge on what women really want to work, and spoil our ladies just a little bit better this year. And for the women out there with illiterate husbands, this month is all about you, so treat yourself to something nice.
