Mobile users, who need to get connected at different venues, often find it frustrating to try and determine what WiFi connections are available where, says Paul Maher, CEO on local online retailer, Nanoelf.
"It can take you five minutes just to power up your laptop, wait for it to boot, then discover that there are either no available wireless access points or they are encrypted," says Maher.
To ease hotspot detection issues, Nanoelf is bringing a WiFi detection and analysis device to the local market later this month, the company says.
The Digital Hotspotter, from US-based group Canary Wireless, is a second-generation WiFi detection and analysis device that provides information about most wireless 802.11 b/g WiFi networks, such as signal strength, channel, SSID and type of encryption.
Users can scroll through detected networks and display information associated with them, says Maher.
"The Digital Hotspotter is an essential tool for anyone deploying or using a wireless network and provides instant information. It is also great for students and travellers who would like to find out instantly if there is a wireless network in the area and all its information.
"The pocket-sized unit (67 x 55 x 27 mm, 128g), is powered by two AAA batteries, and will show you in seconds what`s available and whether it`s even worth unlimbering your laptop. Better yet, its quick and clear readouts allow you to use it as you walk around the airport concourse looking for a place where you can sit and still be connected."
