Wii the most efficient console

A non-profit research organisation has studied the power consumption of the three major game consoles, and found there's a big winner when it comes to energy efficiency: Nintendo Wii, writes Earth Techling.

The Power Research Institute (EPRI) says the Wii system uses one-sixth the juice of Sony PlayStation 3 or Microsoft Xbox 360.

In a press release, EPRI scientists said they tested the consoles playing EA Sports' Madden 2011 football game, not because they're huge football fans but because the game is popular and available on all three platforms. The Nintendo Wii system used an average of 13.7W, PlayStation 3 used an average of 84.8W and Xbox 360 used an average of 87.9W.

UK fast-tracks green patent applications

The UK is set to become a world leader in green energy technology by fast- patent applications, the intellectual property minister says, states UPI.com.

More than 300 patent applications are being fast-tracked through London's so-called green channel.

Judith Wilcox, the intellectual property minister for the British government, says the global race to advance green energy technology made London one of the premier places for new developments. "The demand for low-carbon products is growing across the world," she said in a statement. "Putting the UK at the forefront of the green technology industry will deliver enormous benefits to this country."

Melaka city to be greened up

The Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) will collaborate with Adelaide city in South Australia in developing Melaka city into a green technology city, says Bernama.com.

Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam says the cooperation would begin in the first quarter of 2011, with MPHTJ to start developing public amenities using green technology by the end of the year.

"Adelaide's local authorities use a lot of green technology in their activities, and we want to adopt all that," he said after officiating at the appointment and swearing-in of the city mayor, and presidents and members of the Melaka local councils for 2011 at Dewan Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh.
