EMC's VNX storage array has been named the No. 1 integrated storage solution for VMware in research published recently by Wikibon. The research was designed to establish the level of integration against all the new VMware storage APIs for different vendors for two VMware environments: general and block-only. EMC's VNX storage array led in both categories.
Riaan De Leeuw, Mid-Tier Business Manager of EMC Southern Africa, explains that because VMware is the market leader in virtual solutions, integration with VMware is important from a customer perspective.
"Storage integration is key for any organisation in the process of defining their virtual strategy, because the enterprise infrastructure needs to support the flexibility and agility that virtualisation will bring," De Leeuw says.
"The ultimate goal is to have an end-to-end virtual infrastructure so that the customer benefits from enhanced service level agreements (SLAs) while simultaneously deriving the functionality and management benefits offered by a virtual infrastructure."
The Wikibon survey was based on the premise that while integration may be only one factor in selecting storage, it is highly important for users. With VMware's release of vSphere 5.0, it had become necessary to review the many advantages available to users around the applications and service. The EMC VNX storage array led in both categories, general and block storage.
While EMC is the clear leader in storage market share from a global perspective, the company also holds almost half of the South African storage market share, twice as much as its nearest competitor.
"From a local point of view, EMC is well ahead in virtualisation, and should be any company's first consideration in decision-making," De Leeuw says. "Whether it's in the mid-market or enterprise space, EMC is the best company to partner with for virtualisation."
The Wikibon report points out that customers' top priorities remain data protection, storage performance and ease of management.
"Again, EMC leads those three integration points in the market, both globally and in South Africa," De Leeuw says.
