Microsoft South Africa has announced that Microsoft Windows Server, Limited Edition version 1.2 will be made available to local server OEMs later this month.
Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition 1.2 is based on the same 64-bit code development that will be delivered in the Windows .NET Server family and is optimised to enable customers to take advantage of the performance enhancements in the new Intel Itanium 2 processor.
Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition 1.2 is a full-featured, fully supported, 64-bit server operating system suitable for memory and computation intensive applications such as those for large database analysis, online transaction processing, business intelligence, scientific computing and simulation models. The 64-bit operating systems provide enterprise customers with substantial scalability performance.
"Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition 1.2 provides customers with an opportunity to evaluate, develop and deploy solutions on 64-bit Windows technology with additional scalability and reliability for memory-intensive applications," says Desmond Nair, server product manager at Microsoft South Africa. "Intel and the industry are making great progress building enterprise solutions for the Itanium 2 processor," says Joubert de Lange, business development manager for Intel South Africa. "With the processor`s outstanding performance, enterprise-class capabilities and enormous industry support, 2002 will be the year the Itanium processor family makes real headway toward becoming the platform of choice in high-end data centre computing.
"This broad choice of operating systems, such as Microsoft`s versions of Windows.NET Datacenter and Windows Server, Limited Edition version 1.2 for the Itanium 2 processor, brings to the market the pricing benefits of Intel volume economics," continued De Lange.
Microsoft will continue its support of Intel Itanium 2 processors in 64-bit versions of the upcoming Windows .NET Enterprise Server and Windows .NET Datacenter Server as well as in Windows XP 64-bit Edition version 2003.
Windows XP 64-bit Edition 2003 is a high-performance platform enabling the next generation of powerful Windows-based workstation applications for Itanium 2 platforms. It is designed for business customers engaged in solving complex scientific problems, creating high-performance design and engineering applications, or creating 3D animations.
This 64-bit architecture provides developers with the freedom to create 64-bit applications using familiar Windows programming models, encouraging the development of a wide-ranging set of enterprise software for the platform.
