Windows Phone gets server tools

The new release is an add-in that lets users connect to and manage Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

Connecting to a Windows server via Windows Phone 7 requires two components: the Windows Server Solutions phone application and the Windows Server Solutions Phone Connector add-in.

The Windows Server Solutions phone app the Windows Phone 7 component. There are versions of this app for each of the supported servers: My Home Server for Windows Home Server, My Business Server for Small Business Server, and My Storage Server for Storage Server 2008 R2.

The phone app is downloadable from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace or from the Zune Markeplace right from the phone or PC. Users can find the app by searching for 'My Home Server.'

“After completing the integration of your Windows Phone 7 phone into a WHS 2011 server, you can use your phone to perform remote server management tasks (such as views alerts, manage users, and start and stop backups),” says Microsoft, writes PC & Tech Authority.

Microsoft warned anyone using the connector to take phone seriously. It recommend that users protect their phones with a lock screen PIN.
