Windows Phone to overtake BlackBerry?

Johannesburg, 22 Aug 2012

The Windows Phone platform is poised to overtake BlackBerry in the US, as the once market leader's market share continues to plummet.

This is according to a post by WPPoweruser, with a StatCounter graph, that charts the current Windows Phone growth rate against the steady decline of Research In Motion's BlackBerry platform in the US. The graph shows the Windows Phone platform could overtake BlackBerry by the end of November. StatCounter is drawn from its Web usage statistics.

The arrival of the first Windows Phone 8 handsets in September is expected to give the Windows Phone Platform a much needed boost in the smartphone market, as major partners Nokia and Samsung are expected to release new Windows Phone devices.

While BlackBerry 10 is also expected before year-end, it will remain to be seen if the new platform can be a turning point for RIM in mature markets like the US, or if it will be too late.

According to the latest figures from IDC, Android commands the global smartphone market with 68% of total market share (with 44% of all Android shipments attributed to Samsung).

The share gains it made last quarter are due mostly to Nokia, which almost doubled its Lumia/Windows Phone shipments sequentially. Though it's closing in on the third spot, Windows Phone is still a distant competitor to Android and iOS.

“Microsoft will need to generate additional momentum from Windows Phone 8 devices, which will be introduced this fall, if it is to narrow the share gap further between itself and the three mobile OS leaders,” says IDC.

As noted by TechCrunch, when the Windows 7.5 platform, known as “Mango” was unveiled last year, both Gartner and IDC research suggested that Windows Phone would garner 20% market share by 2015 - by virtue of its hardware partnerships. Both research firms also predict Windows Phone will steal the second top spot in market share from Apple's iOS by that time.
