Unisys Virtual Integrator Suite (VIS) enables new Winnipeg freight hub to be on leading edge of international distribution and logistics services Unisys Corporation today announced that Winnport Logistics Limited, a Canadian transportation consortium, has selected Unisys Virtual Integrator Suite (VIS), the industry-recognized solution, to provide reliable freight services to its customers at lower cost. The contract value is $5 million over 10 years. Winnport Logistics, a consortium developing an international multi-modal distribution hub at Winnipeg International Airport in Manitoba, Canada, is establishing worldwide distribution networks in air cargo, rail and road freight, electronic commerce, and finance. Its plan is to develop a multi-modal hub leveraging established route systems, capabilities, time and cost advantages of using Winnipeg as an air cargo/multi-modal gateway for North America. The Canadian Government has awarded Winnport`s air carrier partner, Kelowna Flightcraft of Kelowna, British Columbia, the newly obtained rights for a Canadian carrier to operate scheduled all-cargo services to China from any point in Canada. Unisys VIS helps the traditional air freight industry control the flow of goods from shipper to consignee while simultaneously reducing delivery costs. VIS enables airlines and freight forwarders to emulate the closed loop systems currently in use by major integrated operators. A closed loop system is a set of standardized processes, cycle performance measurements, and controls supported by existing technological capabilities, such as bar coding and `smart scanning`, to monitor and manage the movement of every piece in a shipment. "Unisys Virtual Integrator Suite places Winnport on the leading edge of customer service technology in the transportation industry," said Lynn Bishop, president of Winnport Logistics. "The system will provide real-time control of cargo and tracking information. VIS has the only functionality that enables us to address our strategic requirements." Gail Blauer Jones, vice president of Freight Management, Unisys Worldwide Transportation, said, "In choosing VIS, Winnport has selected an innovative, industry-recognized approach to enable the traditional air freight industry to make time-definite, reliable commitments. Our work has been recognized by Cargo 2000, the special IATA interest group with which we continue to be involved in the development of functionality." Winnport Logistics is backed by 42 partners, with 13 coming from the transportation sector in industries such as trucking, rail, freight forwarding, customs brokerage, and electronic data interchange. Its air carrier partner, Kelowna Flightcraft Ltd., is Canada`s third largest carrier. Together, Winnport and Kelowna Flightcraft will operate an international all cargo scheduled air service using 747-200 freighter aircraft. Along with being the first of its kind in Canada, the new service will become only the second North American-based all cargo service having access into China. Winnport and Kelowna are now planning operations for Singapore and Malaysia. Winnport selected VIS after a needs assessment revealed that as a new contender in the global freight business, Winnport would require immediate access to world-class capabilities. With VIS, Winnport has immediate and low risk access to robust business functionality. Additionally, the VIS reputation as an industry-leading solution benefits marketing efforts, since freight forwarders are receptive to working with a familiar and accessible information system.- Further information on Winnport Logistics is available through Winnport`s home page on the Internet: Http://www.winnport.com
