Burglars have once again targeted the University of the Witwatersrand, this time taking six hard drives from the Anatomical Sciences department during a break-in in the early hours of this morning.

This is the second burglary at the same building on the Braamfontein campus in two months. In January, 11 computers were stolen.

Wits head of Rob Kemp says six offices were broken into, and the missing property is still being quantified. This time, the burglary reportedly took place on the north side of the building, while thieves gained access to the south side during the earlier break-in.

"The Campus Control Directorate and the South African Police Services are on the scene scouring for fingerprints. They are still trying to determine how the thieves accessed the building, but there are signs of forced entry," Kemp states.

"Extra security will be deployed to the area."

During the January break-in, Kemp confirms thieves cut through a palisade fence to gain entry to the campus. A suspect was subsequently arrested, but was released due to a lack of evidence, says Kemp, adding to date, no one has been prosecuted for that break-in.

However, he is more optimistic about catching the culprits responsible for the latest crime, as there seems to have been more evidence and fingerprints left at this crime scene.
