WLAN becomes standard
Controller-based, wireless LANs are quickly becoming a standard feature of enterprise networks, says Network World.
According to a new study by BT North America, nearly one-third of enterprises are migrating to the high-throughput draft 802.11n WLAN standard within the next 12 months.
About 39% of the survey respondents said they have controller-based WLAN architectures, and 22% more are either actively migrating to that or plan to. According to Rick Blum, director of strategic marketing for the BT consulting group, the trend is most pronounced in larger companies.
Amazon acquires networking site
Amazon.com is reportedly buying Shelfari, a social networking site for book lovers, says Cnet.
Shelfari allows users to create virtual bookshelves and share title lists among friends.
The deal comes about three weeks after Amazon announced it would acquire AbeBooks.com, which specialises in out-of-print book sales.
Nurien unveils next-generation platform
Nurien Software, a leading developer and operator of social networking and online gaming services, announced its participation at NVISION 08, a first-of-its kind visual computing mega-event, happening from 25 to 27 August, reports The Earth Times.
NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang will deliver the keynote address on the latest innovations and trends in visual computing, with a special highlight of Nurien's next-generation platform.
"Nurien is going to take online social networking to the next level with 3D realism and interactivity," said Taehoon Kim, co-founder of Nurien Software. "Advances in visual computing are dramatically changing the way people express themselves, play games, and interact with one another in virtual worlds."
