Workshifting to go mainstream in 2013

Johannesburg, 12 Mar 2012

Nearly all organisations will enable workshifting by the end of 2013, as businesses across the globe are widely embracing mobile work styles as a way to empower business innovation.

This is according to the Citrix Global Workshifting Index, which describes workshifting as the practice of moving work to the most optimal location, time and resources.

Released last week, the Index indicates that, by the end of 2013, 93% of organisations will have implemented workshifting , up from the 37% that currently offer workshifting for part, or all, of their workforce.

To operate effectively in today's fast-paced global environment, organisations need to be able to get work done anywhere, anytime, by any type of worker, to achieve the best results, says Citrix in a white paper.

The company claims that workshifting also allows organisations to recruit and retain the best people, regardless of their physical location or employment status, whether that is full-time, part-time, contractor, consultant, temporary worker or outsourcing provider.

“We've long believed that workshifting is a key part of a solid business and IT and these survey findings are an indicator that this trend is going mainstream. Organisations around the globe are moving from traditional work environments and realising real estate, travel and labour cost savings by enabling mobile work styles,” he adds.

“For people, this means moving work to a place where they find inspiration and can be their most productive. For organisations, it means reducing business and IT costs while providing flexibility to allow people to work anywhere, anytime and on any device,” he explains.

According to the survey, desktop virtualisation is emerging as a key technology for creating a more flexible workplace, with 91% of organisations planning to implement the technology by the end of 2013.

Of those implementing desktop virtualisation, 57% indicated they are implementing or will implement it to enable workshifting.
