Removable data storage media supplier Imation launched the Imation Micro Hard Drive today, recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world`s smallest hard drive.
The portable hard drive features USB 2.0 technology for high-speed data transfer and multi-platform compatibility and requires no external power source as it taps into a PC or Mac to operate, said Imation SA sales manager Juan David Fajardo at the launch.
The device offers magnetic data encoding and error correction to help ensure read-write reliability, says Fajardo. The 2GB capacity will be upgraded to 4GB at the end of the year, he said. It offers a read speed of up to 5MBps and a write speed of up to 3MBps.
"The product is shock-resistant up to 1 000Gs, making it ideal for travelling," he added.

The device is managed using the bundled OpdiTracker software, which provides users with "virtually online" access to discs and their content, he said, allowing database searches by title, keyword and filename.
ForceField scratch-resistant CD and DVD disc were also launched locally recently.
The discs have a protective coating, Fajardo said, which is a thin polymer layer of protection on the recording side, guarding against most everyday wear and tear.
Also new to the market is the LightScribe direct disc labelling system. Fajardo expects the system, which consists of hardware, software and media components, to replace all other types of disc labelling in future.
