Xerox launches affordable CAD/CAM workhorse

Johannesburg, 04 Jan 1999

Xerox Channels Group (XCG) has announced its DocuPrint C20, a shared colour thermal ink jet solution for small workgroups, graphic artists and engineering departments with demanding CAD/CAM applications.

Where inkjets were lacking professional image quality in the past, recent developments in printer head technology have placed it on par with most entry-level laser printers. The result is affordable laser-quality 1200dpi-like documents and graphics in colour.

Angie Samuel, marketing manager of XCG, says the C20 is designed to perform at its best when working with graphic applications where a wide format output is required for drawings, posters, and a variety of other media. The printer can be used in Windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT, OS/2 MAC, DOS and Unix environments.

"The C20 can be easily integrated with current monochrome or colour lasers on the network and provides broad software and system compatibility that connects to existing PostScript and PCL5e applications," she says.

At 600 x 600dpi resolution in black and colour, and 1200dpi image quality to enhance fine details in images and laser equivalent black text, the DocuPrint C20 prints up to 8ppm in black and 4ppm in colour.

"With the C20 businesses can set printer options to black, business colour and photo colour, to suit specific document requirements. The optional photo cartridge is swappable with the black cartridge and can be used to create high quality prints of photographs and graphics.

"Black combined with the light cyan and light magenta ink in the cartridge provides six colours for better photographic reproduction," says Samuel.

The C20 also supports a myriad of media up to 3200mm x 559mm (A3 oversize) and prints on virtually any medium. It has an output capacity of 50 sheets of paper, 15 envelopes or sheets of cardstock, 10 label sheets and also prints on transfer paper and transparencies.

"The printer will be sold in two configurations: the direct connect C20 and the network ready NC20. The latter includes the printer, an optional Ethernet Adapter and 100 sheet feeder and 16K additional memory (total 24Mb) as standard," Samuel explains.

The C20 comes standard with a high-speed IEEE 1284 ECP compliant bi-directional parallel port. An optional Triport Adapter card enables concurrent support for serial, localTalk or IrDA- compliant high-speed infrared connectivity when used with the infrared adapter.
