USA Today and Xerox Corporation will be working together to publish a daily "Sydney Extra" supplement for each copy of the regular USA TODAY newspaper. The four-page Sydney Extra edition will contain up-to-date results of every Olympics race and competition from the day before.
"With Xerox digital printing technology behind the Sydney Extra edition, our readers can have the most timely and comprehensive Olympics summary first thing in the morning," said Tom Curley, president and publisher, USA TODAY. "This immediacy will satisfy readers and reinforce USA TODAY as the leading source of Olympics news in print."
Xerox digital printing technology provided the best avenue for USA TODAY to bring its Sydney readers timely Olympics results. Since the regular USA TODAY newspapers for the Australian market are printed in Hong Kong - a 10-hour flight away - Olympics results information in the newspaper would be incomplete.
However, with Xerox digital printing technology, the USA TODAY Sydney Extra edition can be printed at midnight Sydney time. Each day`s Olympics results, photographs and medal counts will be compiled and produced by the USA TODAY staff. The finished pages will be sent electronically to Corporate Documentation Management Ltd., a commercial print shop, where up to 8,000 copies of the 11-by-17-inch supplement will be printed on high-speed Xerox DocuTech digital printing systems. USA TODAY will then insert a finished Sydney Extra edition into each regular newspaper and have the complete, timely news package available to readers by 6 a.m.

The USA TODAY/Xerox printing partnership reflects Xerox`s focus on bringing its digital printing and document-management innovation to new markets. Xerox and Gannett Co. Inc., owner of USA TODAY, pioneered the on-demand newspaper concept in 1998 with Gannett`s Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle. Since then, other papers including The Arizona Republic and The Philadelphia Inquirer have used Xerox technology and expertise to bring on-demand newspapers to their readers.
