solutions provider XON Systems has donated a new vehicle to a centre that teaches ICT skills.

XON Systems handed over the vehicle to officials from Vukani-Ubuntu Community Projects during a ceremony held in Midrand on Monday.

Vukani-Ubuntu is a non-government organisation (NGO), which was formed in 2002 to run several community development projects, including ICT skills development. The organisation targets the youth, enabling previously disadvantaged individuals with a Matric certificate to learn computer and other skills, for no charge.

"The students will use the vehicle for transport purposes during their three-month internship programme. They will be able to pick up PCs that need to be fixed and bring them back to the workshop for repairs," says Sarichia Coetzer, marketing manager at Vukani-Ubuntu.

Skills taught at the Vukani-Ubuntu lab include entrepreneurial and communication skills, as well as N+ and A+ accreditation.

"We have 107 students at the Vukani skills labs and about 40% of them have managed to be placed in jobs with our partner companies," says Coetzer.

The Vukani-Ubuntu Community Projects is an Umalusi-accredited further and training (FET) provider. Umalusi is a council for quality assurance in the general and further education and training sector of the National Qualification Framework (NQF). It ensures the providers of education and training have the capacity to access and deliver qualifications and learning programmes.

"We are hoping to get an ISETT SETA accreditation soon," says Coetzer.

Vukani-Ubuntu Community Development Projects and XON Systems have also formed a business partnership that will give more students work experience at XON`s premises.
