Yahoo Mail gets major revamp
Yahoo Mail is getting its biggest redesign since 2005 to make it a message hub for its 279 million users, reports the BBC.
At the centre of the revamp is a plan to make the communications system much more compatible with social media.
This means users can post updates to Facebook and Twitter without ever leaving Yahoo Mail. Texting and sending instant messages have been updated. Yahoo says the service will be twice as fast as Google's Gmail and Microsoft's Hotmail.
Dutch police dismantle Bredolab botnet
Dutch police and Internet security organisations have teamed up to dismantle many of the command and control servers associated with the Bredolab botnet, reveals The Register.
The Bredolab Trojan, which has spyware components that allow criminals to capture bank login details and other sensitive information from compromised machines, has infected an estimated 30 million computers worldwide since its emergence, in July 2009.
Infected machines remain pox-ridden, but the command system associated with the cyber crime network has been decapitated, following an operation led by hi-tech police in The Netherlands.
Bill targets 'coward' WikiLeaks
A Republican senator has proposed rewriting the Espionage Act to target WikiLeaks, according to CNet.
Senator John Ensign, of Nevada, revealed a Bill that would make it illegal to identify informants working with the US military, which WikiLeaks did earlier this year when releasing files from the war in Afghanistan.
In last week's Iraq war files release, WikiLeaks removed names, but the US Defence Department said information in the leaked documents could still identify dozens of people.
Lime Wire demise at hand
The end of Lime Wire as it has existed for years appears to be at hand, notes CNet.
US district judge Kimba Wood issued an injunction against the company that operates the long popular file-sharing software Lime Wire.
It orders managers there to disable "the searching, downloading, uploading, file trading... and/or all functionality" of the LimeWire software, Lime Wire said.
