YouTube to stream Olympics coverage in HD

Olympics fans across Asia and sub-Saharan Africa will be able to watch the Summer Games in London live via YouTube this July and August, Mashable writes.

The International Olympic Committee's (IOC's) YouTube channel will broadcast 2 200 hours of HD coverage for people in Singapore, India, Malaysia, Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya, according to a YouTube blog post last week. The live stream will include every medal final.

According to The Verge, the IOC is focused on providing coverage to countries where digital broadcasting rights have yet to be sold.

Overall, the feed will consist of 10 live channels from 9am until 11pm (London time) plus a 24-hour broadcast of the Olympic news channel.

Engadget reports that YouTube has already made a name for itself as a sports broadcaster to worldwide markets with events like the Indian Premier League, and now, with the Olympics, it's taking another step forward.
