Zen Computing announced today that the latest incarnation of their web publishing system (InSite 1.0 - formerly known as ZenCMS) now publishes to WAP based browsers. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is the mobile version of the HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) used to transfer data across the Internet.
The WAP forum`s WAP White Paper defines WAP as "the de-facto world standard for the presentation and delivery of wireless information and telephony services on the mobile phones and other wireless terminals". All of the major manufactures of mobile handsets have committed themselves to providing WAP enabled handsets by the end of the year 2000.
A WML (Wireless Markup Language - the language used by WAP based browsers) version of Zen`s home page (http://www.zen.co.za/wap) was successfully tested on both the Nokia 7110 handset and a software emulator for Ericsson`s r320s. According to Rex Cooper "The architecture of the system allowed us to add WML support with minimal effort".
The choice of XML as the backbone of the product has allowed the System to seamlessly publish to several different formats, currently HTML, WML and PDF. "There are concerted efforts underway to add more formats, including VRML, to this list" says Tsoloane Moahloli, an architect of the system.
"Though there are many solutions out there that can publish to each of these markup languages individually, we are one of the first companies to go to market with a product that can seamlessly publish to any XML compliant markup language" declares Nithia Govender, another designer of the system. "This system is a perfect example of our company policy of using open standards and technologies to provide the most flexible solutions available for our clients."
Zen`s ongoing commitment to extending the WAP capabilities of InSite is further illustrated by their membership the Nokia WAP forum (http://www.nokia.com/wap/) and the Ericsson WAP Developers Zone (http://www.ericsson.com/wap/developers).
