Zim stays on at Telkom

Johannesburg, 09 Feb 2012

Lazarus Zim will stay on as Telkom's chairperson of the board, the national operator announced yesterday.

Zim, who was appointed in February last year, for a 12-month period, has been reappointed to the position and will serve his term of office until the earlier date of either 31 August, or the company's annual general meeting in 2013.

Hailed as a “seasoned businessman”, Zim previously held the position of MD at MTN International and executive director of the MTN Group. He has also served as CEO of the MNet Channel, MD of MNet SuperSport, and CEO of MIH South Africa.

Zim was appointed by the then minister of communications Roy Padayachie to replace erstwhile chairman Jeff Molobela, who retired from the position in mid-February last year.

At the time, it was believed the move by government, with a 39.8% stake in Telkom, may have been based on political motives over the greater business imperative. However, industry observers said the appointment was nonetheless an “inspired choice” in that both the political and business requirements of the high-level position would be effectively filled.
